A Big Year

This is my personal Big Year. Again.  I’m on the hunt again, and I’m using this blog as a way to keep me honest and to check in on a regular basis.

A Big Year

In 2022, I saw 199 different types of birds.

That’s a lot of birds. It’s the most I’ve seen in a single year, in fact. It was my Big Year.

See, a Big Year, in birding terms, is a full calendar year spent trying to see as many different birds as possible. The current record for a Big Year sits somewhere between 750 to 840 birds (depending on the geographic range said birder is adhering to).

So, I’m a ways off that.

But, a lot of birders will do personal Big Years or even Lifetime Big Years (where you just count up all the birds you’ve ever seen ever).

This is my personal Big Year. Again.

I’m on the hunt again, and I’m using this blog as a way to keep me honest and to check in on a regular basis. Now, I should say that I’m going to fudge a bit and start a week early. See, I’ll be on Jekyll Island, off the Georgia coast, from December 27th to January 1st. It’s too good an opportunity to pass up.

So, if you like birds, years, and reading about them - join me!
