Jekyll Island and the Start of a Big Year
I’d mentioned previously that I’m going to start my big year a bit early—December 28th, to be exact. See, I’m going to be on Jekyll Island through the new year, and it’s just too birdful of a place to NOT start.
So what makes Jekyll such a bird watcher’s paradise?
First and foremost, it’s along the Atlantic Flyway, a major route for migrating birds.

It’s also quiet—there are a number of ordinances in place that limit the height of buildings and protect a certain percentage of undeveloped land. All that means it’s a nice place for migrating birds of all types to take a break on their journey.
Being on the ocean also means that, especially during migration, you can expect to see a great variety of birds, from waterfowl to shorebirds to warblers.
So, be on the lookout for dispatches from birdful paradise soon!
